The Celebration of Eid, commonly known as Hari Raya Aidilfitri or Hari Raya Puasa, is a day that connotes triumph for Muslims around the world. It is a Feast of Breaking the Fast and a celebration to mark the end of Ramadan which is the month of fasting and abstinence for our Muslim friends.
It is celebrated on the first day of Syawal, the 10th month of the Hijrah or the Islamic calendar. This year, Hari Raya Aidilfitri falls on Thursday, 8 August 2013.
On this special day, Muslims attend special morning prayers in mosques and visit their loved ones in the cemeteries adorned in their traditional finery.
While Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations are vivid and captivating, we should also remember that the Ramadan or the month long of fasting and abstinence, prior to this celebration is a feast of sacrifices and a time for inner reflection, devotion to God, and self-control and perhaps the best time to experience and understand the Islamic culture and heritage of our Muslim brothers and sisters.
